  U.S. Representative Mike Johnson (R-La.) released the following statement after voting in favor of the 2018 Farm Bill Conference Report:

“After great deliberation, I voted for the ‘Farm Bill’ today, because Louisiana is one of the most important agriculture states in America. In my district alone, there are more than 1.5 million acres of farmland, 7,500 farms and 11,300 farmers, and I have an obligation to support my hard-working constituents. On the other hand, I and every member of this Congress also have an affirmative obligation to practice fiscal discipline. The bill today was flawed, because it forced lawmakers to choose between the well-being of our nation’s food suppliers and the reform of one of our nation’s most broken and bloated welfare programs.

“Rather than giving people the chance to escape poverty through meaningful work opportunities, this bill continues to incentivize able-bodied adults to rely on government assistance. While I believe fiscal reforms and work requirements in a Nancy Pelosi-controlled House will be nearly impossible to achieve, the final version of the ‘Farm Bill’ missed a vital chance to make real, long-overdue adjustments. We must restore order to the process, present stand-alone bills to promote workforce development and give all Americans the tools they need to succeed.”
