The new 116th Congress begins Wednesday, and they do so in the shadow of a partial federal government shutdown. Congressman Mike Johnson has expressed he is uncertain if any end is in sight due to the divide over border security funding.

“All of this is to the detriment of the American people, so let’s hope that a compromise is reached soon and that we can get back to the business of the people,” said Johnson.

Johnson said the partisanship is a sad trend, adding the divisiveness is among the worst in since the Civil War. But he believes the GOP can play defense against the left, and work on the offense plans as well in terms of how they are going to move legislation.

“We’re not deterred at all. I think this is actually a great opportunity and this can be a good, instructive time for the American people. There’ll be some high seas, but we’ll make it through as we always have,” said Johnson.

Johnson said the first issue he’d like to tackle is problems a broken asylum system in the US, as it has resulted in the system being flooded.

“The system has been abused and it’s one of the root problems of the immigration crisis we have right now. Sensible legislation can fix that,” said Johnson.
