Congressman Mike Johnson

Representing the 4th District of Louisiana

Rep. Johnson, 49 Freshman Members Sign Commitment to Civility

February 14, 2017
Press Release

Washington D.C. – On Tuesday, a bipartisan group of 50 freshman members of the 115th U.S. Congress—representing red and blue states from coast to coast—released a document entitled the "Commitment to Civility" and will address the issue on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The document, authored by Rep. Mike Johnson (LA-04), memorializes the members’ agreement to, among other things, restore collegiality, trust and civility to the Congress, encourage productive dialogue, and work to build consensus and the public's trust in America’s institutions.

Rep. Johnson released the following statement:

"I was pleased to draft this commitment document on behalf of my freshmen colleagues to articulate the sentiments that so many of us share. It is encouraging to work with others from across the political spectrum who want to lead by example and work to restore civility to our public discourse. While we may have very different ideas and core philosophies, at the end of the day, we are all Americans. We do well to remember that.”

Immediately following the final vote series today, Rep. Johnson will lead nearly 20 other leaders of the freshman class in individual speeches on this important subject on the House floor and present the “Commitment to Civility” for the Congressional Record. The remarks are tentatively set to begin at approximately 5 p.m. EST.
