Louisiana lawmakers are calling for President Biden to address inflation and U.S. reliance on foreign energy among other issues during his state of the union address tonight.

With record inflation and the price of gas at its highest since 2014, Louisiana GOP members are calling for President Biden to help alleviate financial pains being felt by middle-class Americans.

Now in the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Congressman Mike Johnson and Senator Bill Cassidy say President Biden must be truthful about the effects his administration’s policies have had on the U.S. and foreign relations.

“We hope the President will be honest, the state of the union is in decline, it’s in crisis,” said Congressman Johnson. “We argue of course and the American people can see plainly that’s because of policy choices, so we’re very hopeful that he will announce some new initiatives hopefully to reverse some of the terrible decisions that have gotten us into this mess.”

Senator Cassidy also called for honesty, as well as a plan to move forward without foreign energy.

“He’s going to speak about making the United States energy independent, yet he’s made three decisions in the last three weeks which will make us more likely to be dependent on other countries, all the while increasing global greenhouse gas emissions,” said Senator Cassidy. “So, I think we need to look a what the president says in light of the actions of his administration and I think that what he says is going to be not entirely truthful.”

Senator Cassidy also added that the sanctions placed on Russia by President Biden are only half measures and that current policy shields Russian energy from damage. Cassidy said the United States must be at the forefront of creating a Russian energy-free future.

President Biden is set to deliver his State of the Union address at 8 p.m.
