U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson of Shreveport took a brief break from politics Thursday to celebrate his son Jack's commissioning at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Jack, 18, was joined during the day-long event by parents Mike and Kelly, brother Will and sister Abby.

"Kelly and I could not be more proud of Jack for his hard work and his servant's heart," Mike Johnson said in a statement to USA Today Network. "We are blessed to have watched him grow into the young man he is today and can't wait to see all he will accomplish in service to our country."

Jack Johnson was selected for nomination to the academy by Louisiana U.S. Sens. Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy after being recommended by panels of retired military officers designated by both offices.

Johnson's staff said neither panel was informed of his family connections until after his selection.

Jack Johnson graduated summa cum laude from Benton High School and is the current governor of Louisiana Boys State.
