 On Friday, Rep. Mike Johnson (LA-04) introduced the Securing Our Borders and Wilderness Act to combat the dangerous effects the Wilderness Act is having on our immigration system. Under the Wilderness Act, border security officials may be barred from entering designated “wilderness” areas, leaving approximately 96 linear miles of our Southern border free of law enforcement and therefore open for illegal aliens and drug traffickers to cross into the United States.

Rep. Johnson released the following statement:

“Forcing nearly 100 miles of our Southern border to be void of law enforcement under the guise of ‘wilderness protection,’ not only endangers the American people, but puts the men and women dedicated to protecting this great nation at serious risk. It is no secret that those seeking to enter the United States illegally will do so by whatever means necessary. We should not make it any easier by denying border patrol officers access to the region they are sworn to protect and prohibiting them from dutifully completing their mission. My legislation ensures officers at the border will have the resources and capabilities they need to protect our country and themselves.”
