U.S. House Passes 3 Bills in Support of Our Veterans

Rep. Mike Johnson voted in favor of three bills intended to improve the quality of care veterans receive

Rep. Mike Johnson (LA-04) voted in favor of three separate pieces of legislation aimed at supporting veterans – H.R. 1259, the VA Accountability First Act of 2017, H.R. 1181, the Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act and H.R. 1367, to improve the authority of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to hire and retain physicians and other employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The VA Accountability First Act of 2017 corrects the continued problem of incompetence and corruption among VA employees by providing the Secretary of the VA more flexibility to fire, demote or suspend any employee for poor performance or misconduct. The Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act protects veterans’ Second Amendment rights by ensuring that those who choose to have a fiduciary are not automatically added to the FBI’s NICS list and labeled unfit to own a firearm. And finally, the last bill would establish staffing, recruitment and retention programs to hire the best possible physicians and staff and further alleviates some of the bureaucratic and lengthy processes at the Veterans Administration.

Rep. Johnson released the following statement:

“Our veterans deserve every ounce of our appreciation and respect. As a grateful and indebted nation, we must fulfill our promises to these brave men and women and ensure they have the very best care we can offer. With pieces of legislation like those passed this week, we are making clear and determined steps in that direction. I am dedicated to supporting those that have given their all for this country and will continue to fight for our veterans in Congress.”
