Rep. Johnson Statement on Charlottesville
Washington, DC,
August 17, 2017
Rep. Mike Johnson (LA-04) released the following statement in the aftermath of the Charlottesville attack: "Let me be clear: David Duke has not, does not and will not speak for Louisiana. Our state is filled with compassionate people who respect the inalienable rights of all. The central idea of America is that we boldly declare the self-evident truths that all men are created equal. Because each of us is made in the image of God, every single person has inestimable dignity and value, wholly unrelated to the color of our skin or our diverse backgrounds. "I cannot and do not speak for the president or the White House. I speak for myself, and the attack in Charlottesville was a disgusting display of domestic terrorism. Every leader should denounce the racism, hatred and violence that fuels these tragedies. Any fool who contends he has a natural right of supremacy over his neighbors violates not only the foundational creed of America, but the greatest commandments of the God who created him. "America is at her best when we are united, and we have to work every day to restore that fundamental truth. We have to get back to a place in this country where violence is not an option, where we embrace our differences and show love for our fellow man." |
