Rep. Johnson Supports Bill to Rein in IRS

On Tuesday, Rep. Mike Johnson (LA-04) supported H.R. 1843, the RESPECT Act. This legislation limits the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) civil asset forfeiture authority by preventing the agency from seizing assets without probable cause. The RESPECT Act passed the House by a voice vote.

Rep. Johnson released the following statement:

“The IRS has been known to widely overstep its authority, including some cases in recent years of violating citizens’ right to free speech by targeting groups based on their political beliefs. Without the protections provided in the RESPECT Act, similar abuses could continue in the future. Cleary, due process should apply before the IRS should be allowed to seize private funds, and this legislation is an important step to protect citizens and American businesses in that regard.”
