Johnson Announces Candidacy for Republican Study Committee Chairman

Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) released the following statement to announce his candidacy for chairman of the House Republican Study Committee (RSC):

"Since its founding in 1973, the Republican Study Committee has been referred to as the conservatives’ ‘intellectual arsenal’ in the House of Representatives and has played a critical role in advancing the conservative agenda in Congress. As the largest caucus of conservatives, RSC has a unique ability to influence the political debate and shape legislative priorities for our nation.

"I am truly honored to have been asked and encouraged by so many members to run for chairman, and after much prayer and deliberation, I have decided to do so. I believe the next two years will be one of the most important periods in American history for us to provide clarity, conviction, and consistency to defend and advance our core conservative principles.”

Background

Prior to his election to Congress, Johnson served for nearly 20 years as a constitutional law attorney and leading defender of religious liberty, the sanctity of human life, marriage and family, limited government, free market principles and the Second Amendment. He also worked in various roles as a policy analyst, strategist, legal counsel and advisor for some of America’s most influential conservative organizations. He has litigated and won many high-profile constitutional law cases and authored and successfully defended landmark conservative legislation nationwide.

Johnson has been encouraged by his peers to run for RSC chairman because of his extensive background and experience in law and public policy, in defending and advancing conservativism, and in leading and advising other large conservative organizations. A list of seven core principles he believes should serve as a guide for the caucus’ actions and policy positions can be found here.

Johnson is currently serving his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives where he is an active member on the Judiciary and Natural Resources Committees.

The election for RSC chairman will take place in mid-November, prior to the start of the 116th Congress.
