Johnson Continues to Stand for Pro-Life Causes in Congress

In the first two weeks of the 116th Congress, U.S. Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04) co-sponsored multiple pieces of pro-life legislation and introduced the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA). This bill protects minors from those who might seek to circumvent parental notification or consent laws when obtaining an abortion. Companion legislation was introduced in the Senate by Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).

JOHNSON RELEASED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

“I have made it my life’s work to defend the defenseless and give a voice to those who do not have a voice of their own. Despite challenges we face with a Democratic majority in the House, my Republican colleagues and I continue to fiercely protect the sanctity of human life and fight for the unborn. These measures will help limit the harmful practice of abortion and highlight the inestimable dignity of every human life. I am thankful for the support of my colleagues in this venture and look forward to continuing our efforts throughout the 116th.”

BACKGROUND

CIANA makes it a crime to knowingly transport a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion without satisfying a parental involvement law in the minor’s state of residence. A number of exceptions are listed explicitly in the bill. Included in these exceptions are abortions that are necessary to save the life of the mother and that no minor or parent may be prosecuted. Physicians must also comply with parental notification laws when knowingly performing an abortion on an out-of-state minor, subject to strict exceptions.
