Johnson to Nadler: Make up for Intelligence Committee’s Failure

U.S. Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, today joined several colleagues in sending a letter to Chairman Jerrold Nadler (NY-10) outlining a path to ensure any impeachment proceedings brought before the committee would be conducted thoroughly and fairly. In the letter, Republicans write:

“Unfortunately — and inexplicably — House leadership decided to allow HPSCI [House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence], the House Oversight and Reform Committee, and the House Foreign Affairs Committee to conduct impeachment proceedings. As you know, this is a stark departure from precedent. This departure has led to a bifurcated process wherein the Committee is expected to vote on articles of impeachment without first reviewing all the evidence — both public and underlying — and hearing from investigators and fact witnesses, as was done in both 1974 and 1998.

“Members of the Judiciary Committee — which has historically considered matters of impeachment — must ensure that our committee undertakes a thorough and public review of the facts prior to deciding on articles of impeachment. Without this, Members and the American public cannot be expected to make a decision as important as overturning a national election.”
