Leaders of two conservative groups in the House urged President Trump on Friday to reject any more coronavirus relief packages. Republican Study Committee Chairman Mike Johnson of Louisiana and Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs of Arizona spearheaded a letter signed by 20 other GOP members of Congress cautioning Trump against hasty new spending increases to deal with the fallout of the pandemic. “Now that the CARES Act has been signed into law, we urge you to stand against the additional requests that are already circulating for a rushed fourth and fifth phase of relief. Most of the relief funding from Phase 2 and Phase 3 has not even been distributed yet,” the lawmakers wrote. “We advise caution in considering an additional round of spending outside of the regular process before we have seen the results of the previous three rounds of spending.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, along with the rest of her leadership team, has proposed a fourth coronavirus relief package phase that would include an infrastructure reform plan, direct cash payments to individuals and families, expanding family medical leave, and lengthening unemployment benefits. Additionally, Democrats are eyeing reopening Obamacare healthcare exchanges.
They added, “Every dollar we add to the debt today makes it increasingly less likely that we will be able to provide even the basic services our citizens have come to expect in the decades to come." |
