Vice Chairman Johnson Leads Weekly House Republicans Press Conference

WASHINGTON, September 21, 2021 — House Republican Conference Vice Chairman Mike Johnson (LA-04) today delivered the following remarks at the weekly House Republicans press conference. The Congressman was joined by Republican Whip Steve Scalise (LA), Rep. Stephanie Bice (OK) and Rep. Mike Gallagher (WI).

Read the Congressman’s remarks as delivered below:

“Folks, September is upon us, and make no mistake, our country was facing numerous crises when we all left here for the August district work period. And now, it's only gotten worse.

“We have an economic crisis where jobs remain stalled and consumer prices continue to soar at their highest rate in 40 years.

“We have a border crisis, which is impossible to overstate. We all see these horrific videos showing over 10,000 migrants being housed under a bridge in the hot Texas sun.

“We have a national security crisis. And on Friday, we learned that President Biden's disastrous Afghanistan exit was topped off by a drone strike that killed 10 civilians tragically, including seven children and zero terrorists.

“And after nearly two months of district work away from Washington, instead of coming back early to deal with all these unprecedented crises, the Democrats waited. And now what do they have on the docket for us?

“They have a bill to legalize abortion on demand until birth, they have a bill to spend another $3.5 trillion, and one of the largest tax increases in our nation's history. Really? That's what the Democrats offer the country?

“Their answer to stalled jobs and rising inflation and a humanitarian crisis and a foreign policy crisis is more abortion and trillions more in big government spending.

“It would be hard to find a better illustration of how out of step the Democrats are with our country than their priorities for the upcoming congressional stretch. The American people can see it and Republicans will continue to offer our competing vision for the future of this country.”

Congressman Johnson is the Vice Chairman of the House Republican Conference, a member of the House Judiciary and Armed Services Committees, and a former constitutional law litigator.
