Guest Editorial: Leadership Out of TouchCrowley Post Signal

When U.S. Congressman Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, stepped up to the podium Tuesday to speak at the weekly House Republicans news conference in Washington, D.C., his words spoke volumes on how out of touch our country's leadership has become.
Johnson is vice chairman of the House Republican Conference and a member of the House Judiciary and Armed Services committees. Here's a recap of what he said: "Folks, September is upon us, and make no mistake, our country was facing numerous crises when we all left here for the August district work period. And now, it's only gotten worse." "We have an economic crisis where jobs remain stalled and consumer prices continue to soar at their highest rate in 40 years. "We have a border crisis, which is impossible to overstate. We all see these horrific videos showing over 10,000 migrants being housed under a bridge in the hot Texas sun. "We have a national security crisis. And on Friday, we learned that President Biden's disastrous Afghanistan exit was topped off by a drone strike that killed 10 civilians tragically, including seven children and zero terrorists. "And after nearly two months of district work away from Washington, instead of coming back early to deal with all these unprecedented crises, the Democrats waited. And now what do they have on the docket for us? "They have a bill to legalize abortion on demand until birth, they have a bill to spend another $3.5 trillion, and one of the largest tax increases in our nation's history. Really? That's what the Democrats offer the country? "Their answer to stalled jobs and rising inflation and a humanitarian crisis and a foreign policy crisis is more abortion and trillions more in big government spending. "It would be hard to find a better illustration of how out of step the Democrats are with our country than their priorities for the upcoming congressional stretch." He's right. Gas prices are rising, our personal budgets are unsteady with the increasing grocery prices, the uncontrolled border crisis is an enormous problem, we openly abandoned our own in Afghanistan, our enemies are openly testing our resolve, and our national security is in a dangerous situation that was self-imposed. We let terrorists take over an entire country and we left them billions in technologically advanced weaponry. There is a growing unease - 20 years after 9/11 - that this calamity is going to get worse. The need for strong leadership is never more acutely felt than when it is missing. Without strong leaders, poor decisions are made. We need and deserve much better. |
