WASHINGTON, July 27, 2021 — United States Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04) today released the following statement after Axios reported that approximately 50,000 illegal immigrants have been released into the United States without an official notice to appear in court. Today’s report is the latest evidence that the current, unprecedented humanitarian and national security crisis at the southern border is inexcusable and a growing threat to the safety of all Americans.

“It is an objective fact that the leadership of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is derelict in its duty to secure the nation’s land borders. Since Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is clearly unable or unwilling to carry out his agency’s essential mission, he needs to be replaced with someone who will. It’s time for Secretary Mayorkas to resign.”

Congressman Johnson is the Vice Chairman of the House Republican Conference, a member of the House Judiciary and Armed Services Committees, and a former constitutional law litigator.
